Aquarium Care Guide- New Tanks
March 29th, 2010 | Published in Uncategorized
Before you start owning your personal aquarium, you should first know the basics about the nitrogen cycle and how it affects fish life. A lot of people, who are too excited to get into the fish keeping hobby, fail to do this and so have unknowingly put their pets in danger. In an already set-up aquarium, there are the good bacteria that eat up the poisonous substance called ammonia. These bacteria are produced by already thriving fishes. This is the main problem for new aquariums: the fishes could not be added yet because of the ammonia, but are no bacteria to attend to the existing ammonia because there aren’t fishes yet.
Considering the Nitrogen Cycle
Aquarium nitrogen cycle is simple enough to be understood by any prospect pet keepers. It begins with the production of ammonia, which is caused by various impurities in the water such as the excreted fish waste, the uneaten food particles, contaminations, etc. Then, fishes will release nitifying bacteria that will eat the ammonia and turn it to nitrite, which is a less poisonous substance. After that, the same bacteria will convert the nitrite into nitrate, a something that very tolerable and essentially harmless for the fishes. The nitrate will either be filtered, or dispatched through regular water changing.
Preparing the aquarium is a very important step you should make before going out fish shopping. You do not want to introduce your fishes to a very unstable and unsanitary environment, do you? So, you should pay attention to this. Begin by washing your tank and all other additional accessories with water. As much as possible, avoid using cleaning detergents as their chemical ingredients may be deposited inside your tank. Use de-chlorinated water when you’re already filling up. Don’t forget to attach lightings and filters. Once done with the set-up, check the water whether its PH level and temperature is right.
Fish buying is the most fun part of the starting process because you get to browse and select various types. If you do not have any in depth experience with fishes, start out with the ones that are not so hard to maintain. Few choices would be live bearers, gouramis, danios and barbs. Also, be patient and go for four or five fishes at most in the mean time. Just add up gradually as you prefer. Remember, more fishes means more responsibility. One more note, when you are already transferring your fish from their bags to the aquarium, be careful not to transfer the water as well. This is so you could avoid contamination and water disturbance.
So you already have your fishes in their new home, what next? Well, the key pointer that you must never ever forget is to feed your fishes the right kind of food and the right amount of food. Feeding your fishes with foods that are not meant for fishes would poison them. And feeding fishes with too much food will only lead to increase in ammonia levels as the unfinished food debris become waste. Also, observe your pets intently for signs if they are healthy and well adapted or they are starting to be sick. With all these in mind, you will be very ready to take on the fish keeping venture.
