When visiting a Los Angeles fish store you might find yourself lost as you stare at the wide variety of live corals all full of their own distinct color and movement.  Before you buy coral for the first time, however, you must know some important facts in order to get the species that are right for you and care for them properly once you get them home.  There are many different types of coral for sale that you can choose from, and with the right information you can have a very successful aquarium setup.  But if you aren’t prepared you will not be able to create the kind of environment that these sea creatures need to thrive. 

It is much simpler to buy coral once you understand the three basic categories of live corals on the market.  The first variety is Soft Coral, which is the most appropriate choice for a beginner hobbyist.   You can distinguish Soft Coral from the other types of coral for sale because it does not have a hard skeleton.  This type of coral is good for beginners because they are extremely hardy and most of them do not require expensive lighting to grow and thrive.

Stony Coral is the next category of coral that you will likely find in your local Los Angeles fish store, which includes coral distinguished by their bright and colorful outward appearance.  These coral range in color from bright pink to deep blue and are quite a sight to see, but they are also the most difficult to care for.  Stony Coral requires perfect water conditions, high calcium levels and the more expensive bright metal halide lighting.

Large Polyp Stony Coral is the final category of coral for sale.  This type of coral is still very colorful and can add quite a bit of movement to the aquarium, but they are not quite as difficult to maintain as the Stony Coral.  They are pretty hardy, but the coral in this category may require a wide range of lighting and water flow so it’s a good idea to get some advice before purchasing any large polyps.

Live coral might seem very difficult to care for, and it’s true that some species do have some very specific maintenance requirements.  But if you do a little research beforehand, there’s no reason you can’t have a thriving coral reef aquarium at home.
